Werebear Sorceress Guide

Introduction

What happens when you cross a Druid Werebear with a Sorceress? You get a Werebear Sorceress! To many new and returning players whom have never encountered this build before, this might sound like a bad joke. However, this build is completely serious. The Bear Sorceress is made possible by Beast, which allows a non-Druid Character to transform into a Werebear. Equipped with a Dream Helmet, Dream Shield, and Infinity, this Sorceress is an unstoppable force of nature. While the Paladin benefits from the double Dream combination due to having the Synergies for Holy Shock, the Sorceress benefits from it due to the incredible Lightning Damage boost provided by Lightning Mastery. The Bear Sorceress arguably boasts the highest single target DPS (Damage Per Second) in the game, with up to 100K+ Damage per Attack and incredibly fast Attack Speed.

Ideal Standard Setup
Werebear
Attack
Holy Shock
Enchant

With Fire Damage from Enchant on top of the Lightning Damage from Lightning Mastery-empowered Holy Shock, and with a smidgeon of Physical Damage from the weapon itself, monster Immunities are rarely an issue for this Sorceress. Virtually everything, including Uber Bosses, is absolutely massacred by her huge mangy paws. Also, the Werebear transformation itself grants bonus Life and Defense, making this Sorceress quite tanky. All of this on top of solid mobility from Teleport make the Bear Sorceress an incredibly powerful, interesting and fun build to play. A major drawback of this Frankenstein-like creation is that it is extremely expensive: multiple aforementioned high-end Runewords are required for this build to work. However, If you can manage to acquire the necessary gear, the game is going to get spanked - literally.

This build guide assumes you have a Character at Level 75 before transitioning to it. Check out our Sorceress Leveling Guide and our General Leveling Strategies to reach Level 75.

Damage

Attack* is your Damage Skill. It is the only Skill that can be used while the Sorceress is in Werebear form (besides Werebear itself to un-transform). Using it makes your Character swing its weapon once. Holding down Attack makes your Character repeatedly swing its weapon.

Static Field* is great to use against bosses and other high Life monsters. Each cast uses Lightning Damage to lower nearby monster health by 25% of their remaining Life with no limit in Normal difficulty, down to a limit of 33% of remaining Life in Nightmare, and down to a limit of 50% in Hell.
Note: This Skill cannot be used while the Sorceress is in Werebear form!

* Increased Attack Speed Skills (IAS)
* Faster Cast Rate Skills (FCR)

Utility

Enchant* temporarily grants on-hit Fire Damage and Attack Rating to a target Character (including your own), Mercenary, or minion based on its Level.
Note: This Skill cannot be cast while the Sorceress is in Werebear form!

Teleport* is an essential Sorceress Skill (1-Point wonder) used for mobility. Upon activation repositions your Character and Mercenary to or towards your cursor. Can be repeatedly casted to cover long distances.
Note: This Skill cannot be used while the Sorceress is in Werebear form!

Telekinesis* allows you to use a Waypoint, enter a Portal (in most cases), or pick up utility items (Potions, Scrolls, or Gold) from a distance.
Note: This Skill cannot be used while the Sorceress is in Werebear form!

Energy Shield* is a temporary buff that uses your Mana to increase your effective Life pool. While active, a percentage (based on this Skill's Level) of all received Damage results in a loss of Mana. If you have 0 Mana in your Mana pool and receive additional damage, this buff expires and need to be recast.
Note: This Skill cannot be cast while the Sorceress is in Werebear form!

Frozen Armor* increases your Defense rating and briefly Freezes enemies that use melee attacks on you. Doesn't work against ranged attacks. Requires renewal every couple of minutes or so.
Note: This Skill cannot be cast while the Sorceress is in Werebear form!

Warmth* will provide the Sorceress with passive Mana Regeneration based on its Skill Level.

* Faster Cast Rate Skills (FCR)
* Skills that do NOT utilize either FCR or IAS

Attributes

Strength
In this build, we allocate enough Stat Points to Strength to equip all of our gear. Be mindful of how much Strength your gear needs and how much it provides when equipped.

Vitality
After you put your points into Strength and Dexterity, make sure to check if it is recommended to put Stat Points into Energy. Meet the suggested amount of Energy and put any remaining Stat Points into Vitality.

Dexterity
In this build, we do not allocate any Stat Points into Dexterity. We also make sure to keep the amount of Dexterity granted by our gear to a bare minimum to avoid Blocking while attacking in Werebear form.

Energy
In this build, we put anywhere between 50-100 Stat Points into Energy to improve the effectiveness of Energy Shield.

Miscellaneous

Gear Options

While every Stat in the Desirable Stats column is useful for this build, we highlighted the Priority Stats in Teal so you can review the recommended Items and more easily identify the Most Important Stats on them.

Hover over any Item in the Item Options to see a pop-out with the full Item description.

Important: On the standard version of the Bear Sorceress, make sure to keep granted Dexterity and Dexterity requirements on gear to "bear" minimums. Because a Werebear's terrible Block Speed regularly interrupts its Attacks, we want to make sure our Chance to Block is as low as possible on this build.

Gear Notes: Any Item with specialized or niche uses have a superscript that refer to a Note listed here.
1) Only use these items when going for maximum Chance to Block (75%), such as on a Hardcore Bear Sorceress. These high Dexterity requirement and high Chance to Block items are not recommended for the standard build.
2) Call to Arms is optional on this build. If you want/need to increase the tankiness of your Bear Sorceress, keep this item in your inventory or Horadric Cube, and equip it on Weapon-Swap to cast Battle Command and Battle Orders prior to equipping Beast and transforming into a Werebear.
3) These items are used for optional Enchant pre-buff on this build (especially useful versus Uber Bosses). Items that grant +x to Skills/Fire Skills and/or +x% to Fire Skill Damage can be equipped prior to casting Enchant to greatly boost its granted on-hit Fire Damage. Make sure to put enough Stat Points into Strength to wear any or all of this gear if you choose to pre-buff Enchant. After casting Enchant, make sure to equip the standard Bear Sorceress gear.
4) Treachery is used for pre-buffing Fade for All Resistances, Curse Length Reduction, and Damage Reduction, usually prior to taking down Uber Bosses.

Farming Spots

The areas below are well suited for this build to farm efficiently. While this build can also farm other areas, we’ve selected these specific areas to make the most use of the build’s strengths. Please take special note of the danger level, clear speed, item types, and Immunities that define these areas.

Anything that has a in the "Starter" column can be farmed with the lower-end gear listed in "Gear Options"
While there are other Farming Spots in the game, some Builds struggle to efficiently farm those Areas. This may be because the Monsters in the Area are Immune to your primary Damage type, or the Build lacks mobility to quickly progress to its objectives.

Mercenary

Your Mercenary can serve an incredibly important role to the overall success of your build. Whether it’s serving as a front line tank, bringing a pivotal Aura to your arsenal, or employing Physical Damage to kill monsters with an Immunity to your skillset.

Act 2 Desert Mercenary
The Act 2 Desert Mercenary can be hired from Greiz.
He can be equipped with a Spear or a Polearm, a Body Armor and a Helmet.
Every Act 2 Mercenary has access to an Aura and uses Jab as his base Attack. The Aura activates once the Mercenary has engaged in combat and remains active between traveling to and from town. The Auras available are based on what difficulty you hire the Mercenary from.

Holy Freeze Infinity

Infinity, Holy Freeze
We recommend using the Holy Freeze Aura version, as it provides us with a large amount of much needed Crowd Control. Alternatively, a Might Aura version would provide a boost to the overall Physical Damage output of this build.
Infinity provides us with a massive Damage boost as it reduces the enemies Resistances and Defense due to its Conviction Aura. This Aura is also capable of breaking some Immunities, including both Lightning and Fire (Immunities Resource).

The Mercenary is hard to keep alive until you have the minimum gear recommended in this guide. To help survive various scenarios, remember you can drag Healing Potions onto the portrait, or shift + 1/2/3/4 to directly feed them a Healing Potion from your belt. The Mercenary also gains bonus Resistances from Thawing Potions and Antidote Potions.

If your Mercenary dies in battle, you can revive them from any of the Mercenary NPCs in each Act. This does come with an increasing cost, capping at 50,000 Gold. So keep that in mind and decide if the Mercenary is currently worth the cost.

Playstyle

General:

  • Note: Attack and Werebear (un-transform) are the ONLY Skills that can be used while the Sorceress is transformed into a Werebear. As a Werebear, the Sorceress can benefit from passive and active buffs, including those cast while in Sorceress form such as Energy Shield and Enchant; however, Sorceress Skills cannot be cast as a Werebear.
  • Cast Telekinesis on Waypoints to activate them, on Town Portals to get in or out of town, and on certain Red Portals to go through them. Getting into the habit of this will allow you to travel a lot quicker through the game. Telekinesis can also be used to open chests and pop other clickables for loot.
  • Before starting your Magic Find/Experience run, and while on your Weapon-Swap with Beast and Spirit, cast Frozen Armor and Energy Shield once each. Then cast Enchant on both your Sorceress and your Mercenary (and on any melee Party members/Mercenaries if applicable). Make sure to refresh these buffs as soon as they expire.
  • While still on your Faster Cast Rate-granting Weapon-Swap, Teleport to advance towards your Farming Spot or to jump from Elite Pack to Elite Pack while already inside it.
  • Upon encountering an Elite monster (Unique, Super Unique, or Champion), cast Werebear to transform into a Werebear, then swap to your main weapon loadout (with Griswold's Redemption and Dream Kite Shield) and use Attack to mow it down along with any minions.
  • Upon clearing all Elite monsters and any of their minions in the immediate area, swap back to your Weapon-Swap with Beast and Spirit and cast Werebear to un-transform. Now you are again able to Teleport to seek out the next Elite Packs.
  • As a Werebear, recast Werebear at any time (on Weapon-Swap) to un-transform and be able to use/cast any Sorceress Skills, including buffs.
  • Put a random Skill on left-click that is not Attack on your Weapon-Swap to more easily tell whether you are on your Weapon-Swap or main weapon loadout while transitioning in and out of Werebear form. Also, make sure Enchant is not on your right-click while attacking in Werebear form, or you sometimes target allies such as your Mercenary instead of attacking.

For High Monster Density:

  • When encountering high mob density with high Life (e.g. Baal Waves, High Player Count + any high density), and while on your Weapon-Swap, cast Static Field 1-3 times at close range. Then, proceed to finish the mobs off with Attack while a Werebear on your main weapon loadout.

For Bosses:

  • While on your Weapon-Swap, cast Static Field 2-5 times in range of Act Bosses (such as Baal), Uber Bosses, or Diablo Clone in order to weaken them down to or near the 50% Life cap (in Hell). Then, proceed to finish the Boss off with Attack while a Werebear on your main weapon loadout.

Immunities:

  • It is often best to skip Unique monsters that are Immune to both Lightning and Fire, or that are extremely hard to kill (combination of both high Lightning and Fire Resistance) even with Infinity equipped on the Mercenary.

Optional Pre-Buff:

  • Before casting any other buffs, swap out Beast with Call to Arms and cast Battle Command 2 times and Battle Orders once in that order. Swap Call to Arms back out for Beast once you have finished casting the rest of your buffs. Keep Call to Arms close at hand in either your inventory or Horadric Cube so that you can recast its buffs as soon as they expire (approx. every 3 minutes). While not necessary/required for all gameplay, it is highly advised to use Call to Arms and maintain its buffs when playing Hardcore.
  • Cast Enchant after equipping items granting +x to Skills/Fire Skills and/or x% to Fire Skill Damage (see "Gear Options" above), and prior to equipping the standard Bear Sorceress gear, to greatly increase your on-hit Fire Damage for a long duration. Although not necessary/required, pre-buffing Enchant can make a big difference when up against Lightning Immune/Resistant monsters. Also, pre-buffing Enchant is especially impactful when preparing to kill Uber Bosses, and particularly Uber Mephisto.

Optimal Loot/Experience Farming Strategies:

  • Max Level Areas - Having good mobility, decent Magic Find, and insane hybrid Damage, the Bear Sorceress efficiently farms nearly all Max Level Areas with any number of Players in the game, or on any Player Setting in Single Player. The Pit, Ancient Tunnels, and Worldstone Keep are especially good Farming Spots for this build. Make sure to target Elite Packs.
  • Ubers - The Bear Sorceress is among the best builds for defeating the Uber Bosses and acquiring a Hellfire Torch. Boasting arguably the highest potential single target DPS (Damage Per Second) in the game, this build spanks the Ubers with the proper setup and pre-buff (see the "Ubers" Build Variant below).

Breakpoints

For more information on the mechanics involved, check out our in-depth Resource: Breakpoints.

All builds rely on specific Breakpoints for effectiveness throughout the game. Meeting Breakpoints for Cast Rate, Hit Recovery, and Block Rate increases the rate of casting spells, recovering from big Damage, and blocks by 1 Frame per Breakpoint.

Faster Cast Rate (FCR)
Faster Cast Rate controls how fast our Character casts Spells. In this build we aim for 63% Faster Cast Rate for casting Teleport, which is achieved on Weapon-Swap with the suggested gear. Note: Faster Cast Rate only controls the animation speed of the Character, and not any internal or global Cooldowns your spells have.

Cast Rate Breakpoints

Increased Attack Speed (IAS)
Increased Attack Speed controls how fast our Character attacks. In this build we aim for 113% Increased Attack Speed on our weapon; only the weapon's Attack Speed matters for a Werebear. Note: Using other weapon bases requires different amounts of Increased Attack Speed to have the same effect. Please consult the d2planner to determine what values your alternative base requires.

Attack Speed Breakpoints

Faster Hit Recovery (FHR)
Faster Hit Recovery controls how fast our Character finishes the Hit Recovery animation. In this build we aim for 86% Faster Hit Recovery, which is achieved with the suggested gear and Charms.

Hit Recovery Breakpoints

Faster Block Rate (FBR)
We do not target a specific Block Rate Breakpoint. We do our best to avoid Chance to Block on this build.

Faster Run Walk (FRW)
There are no Breakpoints for Faster Run / Walk. With the recommended gear you reach 70% Faster Run / Walk. Please refer to Run / Walk Mechanics for more details.

Hardcore

For all Hardcore gameplay, your primary concern is increasing your Resistances, Damage Reduction, Chance to Block and Maximum Life. This can mean sacrificing overall power level for a more secure playstyle.

The Bear Sorceress can become Hardcore viable with key changes to the Gear, Stat Point allocation, and Skills. Review the changes below before building this character in Hardcore, as some of these changes differ significantly from the standard version of this build.

Gear Changes:

  • Damage Reduction: String of Ears or Verdungo's Hearty Cord in the Belt slot are the best options for having % Damage Reduction on a Hardcore Bear Sorceress.
  • Maximum Life/Mana: Because this build struggles to reach high % Damage Reduction, it is highly recommended (even more so than on most Hardcore builds) to use as many Life-granting Charms as possible. Life + Mana Charms are especially desirable for taking advantage of the buffs provided by both Werebear and Energy Shield. Also, make sure to pre-buff Battle Command and Battle Orders with Call to Arms for massive boosts to both Life and Mana if possible.
  • Chance to Block: A combination of Guardian Angel and Dream Tower Shield make it possible to hit maximum Chance to Block (75%) on this build. Dream Tower Shield is made in the base with the highest possible Chance to Block. Guardian Angel provides additional necessary Increased Chance of Blocking. Guardian Angel also gives 30% Faster Block Rate (FBR), which is enough to exceed the 27% FBR Breakpoint on a Werebear (VERY important since the Werebear has bad a terrible Block Speed!). Guardian Angel additionally provides 15% to All Maximum Resists, allowing for high Elemental Damage mitigation. Finally, maximum Chance to Block (75%) on a Hardcore Bear Sorceress opens up the possibility of using a Gemmed Phase Blade, which maintains maximum Attack Speed while also providing All Resistances with multiple Scintillating Jewels of Fervor.
  • Thundergod's Vigor (Swap): Swap your Belt out for Thundergod's Vigor when farming Worldstone Keep or "Teleporting" to the Throne of Destruction to avoid getting destroyed by the Burning Souls that often spawn there. Loss of Damage Reduction or Faster Cast Rate from swapping is acceptable here.
  • Stacking Resistances: If possible, and when necessary, make sure your Fire/Lightning/and Cold Resistances are stacked beyond the Guardian Angel-granted 90% caps (190 total Resistances in Hell) to guard against Elite monsters with Conviction Aura. Stacking these Resistances 85 past the 90 caps/maximums (275 total Resistance) completely negates the Conviction Aura of any enemy. When choosing to stack Resistances, keep in mind which primary damage type(s) the monsters deal in the area you want to farm. High X Resist +x% or All Resistances +x granting Grand and Small Charms can shore up your Resistances for this purpose. Resistances on Boots, Jewels or Jewelry also help.

Stat Point Changes:

  • Allocate enough Stat Points into Strength to wear Guardian Angel.
  • Allocate enough Stat Points into Dexterity to achieve maximum Chance to Block (75%) while having both Guardian Angel and Dream Tower Shield equipped.
  • Allocate all remaining Stat Points into Vitality.

Skill Point Changes:

  • A Hardcore Bear Sorceress' Skill Point allocation is the same as for the standard version of the build (see the "Standard" Build Variant below).

See the "Hardcore" Build Variant below for additional suggestions and visuals.

Build Variants

Ubers

Setup
The "Ubers" variant of the Bear Sorceress specializes in defeating the Uber Bosses, including mini-Ubers such as Lilith. Crushing Blow, Open Wounds, Damage Reduction, Resistances, and Life are priority stats on this build. Chains of Honor provides much needed high All Resistances, while String of Ears provides additional Damage Reduction. Goblin Toe provides Crushing Blow, which is especially helpful versus Uber Mephisto. Thundergod's Vigor and stacked Lightning Resistance allows this build to tank Uber Mephisto. Additionally, it is optimal to pre-buff Fade with Treachery as well as Battle Command and Battle Orders with Call to Arms prior to engaging the Ubers. Pre-buffing Enchant (see "Gear Options" above) makes toppling the Ubers even easier. We only achieve the 20% Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint on Weapon-Swap for casting Teleport on this variant.

Mercenary
The standard Mercenary for any of the Bear Sorceress variants uses an Infinity, Fortitude, and Andariel's Visage socketed with a Ruby Jewel of Fervor.

Skills
The "Ubers" Bear Sorceress uses the same Skill Point distribution as the standard build.

Put 1 Skill Point into each of the following Skills:
1. Static Field
2. Telekinesis (Max Last)
3. Teleport
4. Energy Shield
5. Frozen Armor

Max out the following Skills in this order:
1. Lightning Mastery
2. Enchant
3. Warmth
4. Fire Mastery
5. Telekinesis

Use the Scroll Bar to see Skill Point Progression

Attributes
For the "Ubers" variant, put enough Stat Points into Strength to wear all of your gear. Then put the rest into Vitality.

Hardcore

Setup
For the "Hardcore" mode variant, we aim for decent Damage Reduction and maximum Chance to Block (75%) to guard against taking extreme amounts of Physical Damage. Additionally, we raise the cap on all of our Resistances to 90% to guard against high Elemental Damage. We also overcap our Resistances beyond the 90% cap to keep them high or capped under the influence of hostile Conviction. Pre-buffing Battle Command and Battle Orders with Call to Arms is highly advised for Hardcore. We only achieve the 37% Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint on Weapon-Swap for casting Teleport on this variant. For detailed information about the "Hardcore" Bear Sorceress variant gear options/changes, consult the "Hardcore" section above. All recommended Hardcore changes are visually displayed in the planner to the right.

Mercenary
The standard Mercenary for any of the Bear Sorceress variants uses an Infinity, Fortitude, and Andariel's Visage socketed with a Ruby Jewel of Fervor.

Skills
The "Hardcore" Bear Sorceress uses the same Skill Point distribution as the standard build.

Put 1 Skill Point into each of the following Skills:
1. Static Field
2. Telekinesis (Max Last)
3. Teleport
4. Energy Shield
5. Frozen Armor

Max out the following Skills in this order:
1. Lightning Mastery
2. Enchant
3. Warmth
4. Fire Mastery
5. Telekinesis

Use the Scroll Bar to see Skill Point Progression

Attributes
For the "Hardcore" Bear Sorceress, put enough Stat Points into Strength to wear all of your gear, put enough Points into Dexterity to achieve maximum Chance to Block (75%), and then dump all remaining Stat Points into Vitality.

Standard

Setup
This is the "Standard" Best in Slot (BiS) Bear Sorceress featured in the beginning of the guide. It is the balanced "jack-of-all-trades" version of the Bear Sorceress, capable of performing the most tasks well. This variant is the point of comparison for all other variants. It carefully balances solid Damage with Magic Find, Defensive Stats, and Teleport mobility on Weapon-Swap.

Mercenary
The "Standard" Bear Sorceress Mercenary uses an Infinity, Fortitude, and Andariel's Visage socketed with a Ruby Jewel of Fervor.

Mechanics

Teleport

  • Teleport instantly moves you to a selected square on the visible screen in which you can stand. The game tries to to place you within a small radius around your cursor even if it would be impeded normally.
  • Teleport is not obstructed by walls or other impediments but can fail if your cursor is not completely passed those impediments when cast. Your Mercenary and Minions are teleported with you, Traps do not.
  • Certain Minions in large quantities can become “stuck” in position after teleporting. Move away from that position to give them the chance to spread out.
  • You can “extend” the visible screen by opening UI-windows like the Inventory or the Character screen. Continuously cast Teleport and drag your mouse to the edge of your screen.
  • The Mana cost of Teleport decreases with additional Skill Levels down to 1 Mana per cast.
  • You can use “ESC” to open the menu in single player to pause the game after a Teleport to determine if you are safe.
  • Teleport casting speed is affected by the Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint that you achieve with your gear.

Static Field

  • Static Field range scales with each Skill Point.
  • In the Nightmare and Hell difficulty you can't reduce a monsters' life past certain thresholds. For Nightmare this threshold is at 33%, in Hell it is at 50%. You can get a little bit past this threshold if your enemy is at negative Lightning Resistances.
  • In Normal difficulty you can bring a monster down to "1 Life". Static Field can't deal the final blow on a monster.
  • Static Field works on any monster you encounter that is not Lightning immune, including all Act bosses.
  • Static Field reduces the current life of a monster by 25%. The Lightning Resistances of a monster will reduce the effectiveness.
  • Damage calculation: Monster Life = Current Life - ((Current Life * 0.75) * ((100-Lightning Resistance) / 100))

Summary

  • The Bear Sorceress requires a Beast and both a Dream Helmet and Dream Shield at a bare minimum. An Infinity on the Mercenary is also highly recommended to give this build the insane power that it deserves.
  • A Werebear has terrible Block Rate. On the standard version of this build, make sure to minimize the amount of total Dexterity in order to have a low Chance to Block. Minimum Dexterity-granting gear such as a 15 Dexterity Raven Frost is advised.
  • Only Increased Attack Speed on a Werebear's weapon matters for improving its Attack Speed. Make sure to use a weapon that provides massive amounts of Attack Speed such as Griswold's Redemption on this build.
  • Remember to cast Enchant, Frozen Armor, and Energy Shield on your + to Skills-granting Weapon-Swap prior to "Teleporting" and transforming into a Werebear.
  • Teleport on Weapon-Swap using your Spirit for improved Faster Cast Rate.
  • The Bear Sorceress can farm virtually anything. With both strong Magic Find and absurdly high Lightning-Fire hybrid Damage, this build dominates nearly every Max Level Area. Even farming Uber Bosses for Hellfire Torches is highly effective on this build.
