Poison Javelin Amazon Guide

Poison Javelin Amazon

Introduction

The Poison Javelin Amazon primarily focuses on dealing Poison Damage and Damage Over Time (DOT) which is great for being able to attack and move on to other targets adding a consistent flow of gameplay. This build specializes in farming The Secret Cow Level which is a very dense and weak to Poison Damage area. Unfortunately there is not much variety of farming spots beyond this specialization.

The Standard Variant uses Jab for Physical Damage and 2 different Poison Damage Skills Plague Javelin for mass Area Of Effect (AOE) and Poison Javelin for linear AOE. Our Passive Skills such as Decoy and Valkyrie provide us with decent survivability and allow us to keep a distance from our enemies. In addition to protection, the Mercenary also increases our Physical Damage with his Might Aura.

Damage

Poison Javelin* is your main Damage Skill. It leaves a trail of Poison Damage in the direction you are throwing. Deals Damage over Time (DOT) to enemies that move into the Poison cloud or are hit by the projectile. DOTs prevent a monster from healing until the effect expires.

Plague Javelin* is your secondary Damage Skill. It has a cooldown but grants a large Area of Effect (AOE) when thrown. Similar to Poison Javelin, this Skill also leaves a trail of Poison Damage. In addition to this a poisonous cloud emanates from its final location. DOTs prevent a monster from healing until the effect expires.

Jab* is a back up Skill that deals melee Physical Damage with 3 attacks in rapid succession.

* Increased Attack Speed Skills (IAS)

Utility

Critical Strike* simply grants you a chance at double Physical Damage. Though this build does not solely rely on this damage type, however it works great for Jab.

Penetrate* gives you additional Attack Rating as a passive bonus.

Pierce* is a very important Skill for this build. It allows your Projectile (Arrows/Javelins) to pass through your enemies allowing you to not only deal damage to your first impacted target, but also the ones behind as well.

Dodge*, Avoid*, and Evade* passively grant you a chance to dodge enemy attacks in the situations mentioned in the Skill. A dodged attack is negated completely.

Decoy* spawns a duplicate of yourself on the area you target drawing the enemy's attention to it.

Valkyrie* also can be used like a Decoy but she acts similar to a Mercenary as it follows you and attacks stuff.

* Faster Cast Rate Skills (FCR)
* Skills that do NOT utilize either FCR or IAS

Farming Spots

The areas below are well suited for this build to farm efficiently. While this build can also farm other areas, we’ve selected these specific areas to make the most use of the build’s strengths. Please take special note of the danger level, clear speed, item types, and Immunities that define these areas.

Anything that has a in the "Starter" column can be farmed with the Starter Variant.
While there are other Farming Spots in the game, some Builds struggle to efficiently farm those Areas. This may be because the Monsters in the Area are Immune to your primary Damage type, or the Build lacks mobility to quickly progress to its objectives.

Mercenary

Your Mercenary can serve an incredibly important role to the overall success of your build. Whether it’s serving as a front line tank, bringing a pivotal Aura to your arsenal, or employing Physical Damage to kill monsters with an Immunity to your skillset.

Act 2 Desert Mercenary
The Act 2 Desert Mercenary can be hired from Greiz.
He can be equipped with a Spear or a Polearm, a Body Armor and a Helmet.
Every Act 2 Mercenary has access to an Aura and uses Jab as his base Attack. The Aura activates once the Mercenary has engaged in combat and remains active between traveling to and from town. The Auras available are based on what difficulty you hire the Mercenary from.

Might Pride

Pride, Might Aura
We recommend the Might Aura version to increase the DPS of our Jab Skill which is great against Poison Immunes.
Pride provides us with a Level 16-20 Concentration Aura which grants +x% Enhanced Damage for our Minions, and also gives them a chance to resist interruption while attacking.

The Mercenary is hard to keep alive until you have the minimum gear recommended in this guide. To help survive various scenarios, remember you can drag Healing Potions onto the portrait, or shift + 1/2/3/4 to directly feed them a Healing Potion from your belt. The Mercenary also gains bonus Resistances from Thawing Potions and Antidote Potions.

If your Mercenary dies in battle, you can revive them from any of the Mercenary NPCs in each Act. This does come with an increasing cost, capping at 50,000 Gold. So keep that in mind and decide if the Mercenary is currently worth the cost.

Playstyle

General:

  • Use Poison Javelin in dense areas with lots of monsters. Target next to a group of enemies and kite the monsters into the created Poison clouds to slay them with Damage over Time (DOT).
  • Use Plague Javelin similar to Poison Javelin. This Skill typically deals more damage but has a Cooldown.
  • Use Valkyrie and Decoy to take the heat off of you.
  • Kite enemies to group up behind each other. With 100% Chance to Pierce you can get Poison Javelin and Plague Javelin to hit multiple enemies in the cluster.
  • Keep a distance from your enemies. This build is generally squishy and can either get stuck in Faster Hit Recovery or just die when your allies are not around or tanking for you.

Immunities:

  • Use Jab and your Mercenary to deal with Poison Immunes.
  • Use Lower Resist against Poison Resistant monsters to aid you in combat with more damage.

Late-Game:

  • At the beginning of each run, buff yourself by swapping to Call to Arms and cast Battle Command then Valkyrie if desired. Cast Battle Command again followed by Battle Orders. Switch back to your main setup.
  • Use a Mercenary with Pride Giant Thresher for Concentration to help you deal with Poison Immunes and more Physical Damage.
  • Teleport provided by either Enigma or a Staff of Teleportation allowing you to move from place to place, reposition yourself, and reposition your Mercenary and Valkyrie.

Breakpoints

For more information on the mechanics involved check out our in-depth Resource: Breakpoints.

All builds rely on specific Breakpoints for effectiveness throughout the game. Meeting Breakpoints for Cast Rate, Hit Recovery, and Block Rate increases the rate of casting spells, recovering from big Damage, and blocks by 1 Frame per Breakpoint.

Faster Cast Rate (FCR)
We do not target a specific Cast Rate Breakpoint in this Build. We do not rely on casting Skills to deal Damage.

Increased Attack Speed (IAS)
Increased Attack Speed controls how fast our Character can throw Javelins. In this build do not really rely on Increased Attack Speed to deal our damage. Most of our damage is dealt over time. Having more Increased Attack Speed can help, especially with Jab but is not required for this build. With that being said we hit 18% Increased Attack Speed on gear.

Faster Hit Recovery (FHR)
Faster Hit Recovery controls how fast our Character finishes the Hit Recovery animation. In this build we aim for 86% Faster Hit Recovery, which is achieved with the suggested gear and Charms.

Faster Block Rate (FBR)
We do not target a specific Block Rate Breakpoint. We do not rely on Chance to Block in this build.

Faster Run Walk (FRW)
There are no Breakpoints for Faster Run / Walk. With the recommended gear you reach 80% Faster Run / Walk.

Hardcore

For all Hardcore gameplay, your primary concern is increasing your Resistances, Damage Reduction, Chance to Block and Maximum Life. This can mean sacrificing overall power level for a more secure playstyle.
This build is Hardcore viable. If you are unaccustomed to this playstyle, we recommend trying this build on Softcore to gain experience on how to successfully pilot it.

Build Variants

Setup
The Starter Variant of the Poison Javelin Amazon aims to get as many + to Skills for additional Poison Damage. Lore, Piece, and are easily obtainable sources of additional Skills.

Mercenary
To keep your Mercenary alive, equip him with a Body Armor and Helmet which provide Resistances and Life. Insight is a pretty easy Runeword to find and farm that gives a great amount of damage and Quality of Life with Meditation. Hire the Might Aura Mercenary, to gain extra Physical Damage.

We aim to hit 86% Faster Hit Recovery total with our gear. Though Increased Attack Speed is helpful we don't aim for a Breakpoint here.
