Dream Paladin Guide

Introduction

The Dream Paladin plays like a dream. Also known as a "Tesladin", this Paladin effortlessly clears all content. Commanding a Level 30 Holy Shock Aura from both a Dream Helmet and Dream Shield, this build vaporizes everything it touches...and even things it doesn't touch! If you enjoy jumping directly into the fray and melting monsters with reckless abandon, the Dream Paladin is the build for you!

This build wields massive Lightning and Physical Damage simultaneously, making the Dream Paladin one of the most powerful, versatile late-game builds. In addition to insane on-hit damage, the Tesladin's Dream-granted Holy Shock Aura passively deals significant Lightning Damage to surrounding enemies in an Area of Effect (AoE). Having a strong active Conviction and Decrepify from the Mercenary's The Reaper's Toll, this build very rarely encounters issues with monster Immunities. The only real drawback of the Dream Paladin is its expense - it requires 2 Jah Runes at a minimum.

Skills

The Dream Paladin puts Skill Points into all 3 Skill Trees.

Put 1 Skill Point into each of the following Skills:
1. Zeal (Max Last)
2. Charge
3. Holy Shield
4. Cleansing
5. Vigor

Max out the following Skills in this order:
1. Resist Lightning
2. Salvation
3. Conviction (Till Level 25)
4. Sacrifice
5. Zeal

Alternatively, put 5-10 additional Skill Points into Holy Shield before maxing Zeal for increased Holy Shield duration, Chance to Block, and Defense.

Use the Scroll Bar to see Skill Point Progression

Damage

Zeal* This is your Damage Skill. Using it makes your Paladin swing his weapon up to 5 times in quick succession. Until the maximum number of swings have been completed, or the attack is interrupted, your Paladin will be rooted in place. Leveling this Skill increases its maximum number of swings or "hits" per use up to 5, and grants you percentage boosts to both your Physical Damage and Attack Rating. Applies on-hit Lightning Damage from Dream-granted Holy Shock.

* Increased Attack Speed Skills (IAS)

Utility

Conviction* This is your Primary Aura - keep active while using Zeal. While active, this Aura lowers the Defense and the Fire, Lightning, and Cold Resistances of nearby enemies based on its Level. This Skill is capable of breaking monster Immunities.

Holy Shield* is a temporary buff that boosts your Paladin's Defense and Chance to Block. This Skill requires use of a Shield, granting improved Faster Block Rate Breakpoints while active.

Charge* Using this Skill causes your Paladin to instantly jet forward towards the position of your cursor. Making contact with an enemy in the process will cause your Paladin to abruptly stop and inflict damage. Applies on-hit Lightning Damage from Dream-granted Holy Shock. While this Skill can be used for dealing Damage on this build, it is mostly used for mobility if not using Enigma.

Vigor* While active, this Aura provides your Paladin and members of your Party with increased Faster Run/Walk based on its Level.

Salvation* While active, this Aura provides your Paladin and members of your Party with increased Resistance to all Elements (Fire/Lightning/Cold) based on its Level.

Resist Lightning* While active, this Aura provides your Paladin and members of your Party with increased Lightning Resistance based on its Level. Every 2 Skill Points put into this Skill raises the cap on your Maximum Lightning Resistance by 1.

Cleansing* While active, this Aura provides your Paladin and members of your Party with a repeating Poison Length Reduction and Curse Length Reduction based on its Level. This Aura is especially useful after killing the 2nd Wave in the Throne of Destruction or if cursed with Amplify Damage.

* Increased Attack Speed Skills (IAS)
* Faster Cast Rate Skills (FCR)
* Skills that do NOT utilize either FCR or IAS

Attributes

Strength
In this build, we allocate as many Stat Points to Strength as we need to equip all of our gear. Be mindful of how much Strength your gear needs and how much it provides when equipped. If the gear piece with the highest Strength requirement also provides you with additional Strength, you can use the Strength bug to equip that item. Check out the Mechanics Section below for details.
Optional: Put additional Stat Points into Strength to increase your Physical Damage.

Vitality
After you put your points into Strength and Dexterity, make sure to check if it is recommended to put Stat Points into Energy. Meet the suggested amount of Energy and put any remaining Stat Points into Vitality.

Dexterity
In this build, we allocate Dexterity to reach 75% Chance to Block. Make sure that Holy Shield is active prior to putting Dexterity Points in. Each Stat Point in Dexterity increases your Chance to Block. Be aware that different Shield bases require different amounts of Dexterity for 75% Chance to Block. Leveling also causes a need for more points to maintain 75% Chance to Block.

Energy
In this build, we don't put any Stat Points into Energy. This build gets enough Mana from gear, buffs, Mana Potions, and Mana Leech.

Gear Options

While every Stat in the Desirable Stats column is useful for this build, we highlighted the Priority Stats in Teal so you can review the recommended Items and more easily identify the Most Important Stats on them.

Gear Notes: Any Items with specialized or niche uses have a superscript that refer to a Note listed here.
1) A Life Tap Charge Wand on Weapon-Swap is used for applying Life Tap to Uber Bosses when options such as Dracul's Grasp or Last Wish Phase Blade are not available.
2) If you have Last Wish, only ever use it versus Uber Bosses. Do not use it for standard gameplay on a Dream Paladin.
3)
Treachery and Demon Limb are used for pre-buffing, usually prior to taking down Uber Bosses. Treachery pre-buffs Fade for All Resistances, Curse Length Reduction, and Damage Reduction, while Demon Limb gives Enchant for increased Attack Rating.
4)
Wizardspike is only used for the Faster Cast Rate it can provide on Weapon-Swap prior to acquiring a Call to Arms, or if Barbarian-granted Battle Orders is available.
5)
Only use Naj's Puzzler, a Staff of Teleportation, or a Teleport Charge Amulet for Teleport Charges if you are not using Enigma.

Farming Spots

The areas below are well suited for this build to farm efficiently. While this build can also farm other areas, we’ve selected these specific areas to make the most use of the build’s strengths. Please take special note of the danger level, clear speed, item types, and Immunities that define these areas.

Anything that has a in the "Starter" column can be farmed with the lower-end gear listed in "Gear Options".
While there are other Farming Spots in the game, some Builds struggle to efficiently farm those Areas. This may be because the Monsters in the Area are Immune to your primary Damage type, or the Build lacks mobility to quickly progress to its objectives.

Mercenary

Your Mercenary can serve an incredibly important role to the overall success of your build. Whether it’s serving as a front line tank, bringing a pivotal Aura to your arsenal, or employing Physical Damage to kill monsters with an Immunity to your skillset.

Act 2 Desert Mercenary
The Act 2 Desert Mercenary can be hired from Greiz.
He can be equipped with a Spear or a Polearm, a Body Armor and a Helmet.
Every Act 2 Mercenary has access to an Aura and uses Jab as his base Attack. The Aura activates once the Mercenary has engaged in combat and remains active between traveling to and from town. The Auras available are based on what difficulty you hire the Mercenary from.

Might Reaper's Toll

Reaper’s Toll, Might
We recommend the Might Aura version, as it provides us with a significant Physical Damage boost. The Reaper's Toll has a 33% Chance to cast Decrepify on striking, which Slows your enemies down as well as increases any Physical Damage dealt to them. Decrepify can also break Physical Immunity in many cases (Immunities Resource).

The Mercenary is hard to keep alive until you have the minimum gear recommended in this guide. To help survive various scenarios, remember you can drag Healing Potions onto the portrait, or shift + 1/2/3/4 to directly feed them a Healing Potion from your belt. The Mercenary also gains bonus Resistances from Thawing Potions and Antidote Potions.

If your Mercenary dies in battle, you can revive them from any of the Mercenary NPCs in each Act. This does come with an increasing cost, capping at 50,000 Gold. So keep that in mind and decide if the Mercenary is currently worth the cost.

Playstyle

General:

  • Get in the habit of keeping Vigor Aura active while running through town for faster travel.
  • Before each Magic Find/Experience run, buff yourself by casting Holy Shield once. Make sure to refresh this buff as soon as it expires.
  • Use Charge while having Vigor Aura active for mobility. Use this Skill combination to travel towards the Farming Spot of your choosing, or to move from Elite Pack to Elite Pack after you've arrived.
  • Upon encountering an Elite monster (Unique, Super Unique, or Champion), switch to Conviction Aura and, if you have Teleport from an item, use it to "Telestomp" the Elite, jumping directly into the Elite Pack. If not, Charge into the center of the Elite Pack.
  • Engage the Elite(s) and surrounding minions with Zeal until they are dead. Make sure to keep Conviction active at all times while using Zeal.
  • If you have a source of Teleport, use it to quickly relocate to nearby Elite monsters and their minions for smooth transitions.

For Act Bosses:

  • When up against a Boss (like Baal), and if possible, "Telestomp" them as you would an Elite monster. This makes sure that your Mercenary is striking the Boss to proc Decrepify for the Slow and - to Enemy Physical Resistance it provides.

Mind These Situations:

  • Briefly switch to the Cleansing Aura when either you or anyone in your Party is Poisoned or is Cursed with enemy Amplify Damage. After about 2-5 seconds, this Aura will remove these negative status effects.
  • Switch to the Resist Lightning Aura when facing Unique Black Souls, or other Lightning Damage type Unique monsters, with Conviction Aura to prevent your death with a massive boost to Lightning Resistance.
  • Switch to the Salvation Aura when facing non-Lightning Elemental Damage type Unique monsters with Conviction Aura to prevent your death with a massive boost to Fire and Cold Resistances.

Immunities:

  • Skip Unique monsters that are both Lightning and Physical Immune, or extremely hard to kill (combination of both high Lightning and Physical Resistance), even with Conviction active and after applying Decrepify from your Mercenary's The Reaper's Toll.

Late-Game:

  • Start your Magic Find/Experience run by buffing yourself with Battle Command 2 times and afterwards with Battle Orders from Call to Arms. Make sure to continually refresh these buffs as soon as they expire (approx. every 2-3 minutes).
  • While on your Faster Cast Rate-granting Weapon-Swap, use Teleport from Enigma to advance towards your Farming Spot or to jump from Elite Pack to Elite Pack after you arrive.
  • Use Teleport while on your main weapon loadout to reposition your Mercenary to apply Decrepify from his The Reaper's Toll to the mobs that you are striking with Zeal.

Optimal Loot/Experience Farming Strategies:

  • Max Level Areas - Having good mobility, high Magic Find, and insane hybrid Damage, the Dream Paladin efficiently farms nearly all Max Level Areas with any number of Players in the game, or on any Player Setting in Single Player. Worldstone Keep, Chaos Sanctuary, and The Pit are especially good Farming Spots for this build. Make sure to target Elite Packs.
  • Ubers - The Dream Paladin is among the best builds for defeating the Uber Bosses and acquiring a Hellfire Torch. Possessing incredibly high single target Damage and negating Uber Mephisto's Conviction Aura, this build has unique advantages with a proper setup (see the "Ubers" Build Variant below).

Breakpoints

For more information on the mechanics involved, check out our in-depth Resource: Breakpoints.

All builds rely on specific Breakpoints for effectiveness throughout the game. Meeting Breakpoints for Cast Rate, Hit Recovery, and Block Rate increases the rate of casting spells, recovering from big Damage, and blocks by 1 Frame per Breakpoint.

Faster Cast Rate (FCR)
Faster Cast Rate controls how fast our Character casts spells. In this build, we aim for 48% Faster Cast Rate for Enigma Teleport cast speed, which is achieved on Weapon-Swap with the suggested gear. Note: Faster Cast Rate only controls the animation speed of the Character, and not any internal or global Cooldowns your spells have.

Cast Rate Breakpoints

Increased Attack Speed (IAS)
Increased Attack Speed controls how fast our Character attacks. In this build we aim for 72% Increased Attack Speed, which is achieved with the suggested gear. Note: Using other weapon bases requires different amounts of Increased Attack Speed to have the same effect. Please consult the d2planner to determine what values your alternative base requires.

Attack Speed
Breakpoints

Faster Hit Recovery (FHR)
Faster Hit Recovery controls how fast our Character finishes the Hit Recovery animation. In this build we aim for 48% Faster Hit Recovery, which is achieved with the suggested gear and Charms.

Hit Recovery Breakpoints

Faster Block Rate (FBR)
Faster Block Rate controls how fast our Block Animation finishes after a successful Block. In this build, we do not target a specific Block Rate Breakpoint. Holy Shield provides enough Faster Block Rate through a hidden mechanic.

Block Rate Breakpoints

Faster Run Walk (FRW)
There are no Breakpoints for Faster Run / Walk. With the recommended gear you reach 70% Faster Run / Walk.

Hardcore

For all Hardcore gameplay, your primary concern is increasing your Resistances, Damage Reduction, Chance to Block and Maximum Life. This can mean sacrificing overall power level for a more secure playstyle.

The Dream Paladin can become Hardcore viable with key changes to the Gear, Stat Point allocation, and Skills. Review the changes below before building this character in Hardcore, as some of these changes differ significantly from the standard version of this build.

Gear Changes:

  • Damage Reduction Options: Because this build requires both a Dream Helmet and a Dream Shield, there are only a couple of strong options for increasing a Hardcore Dream Paladin's % Damage Reduction. Using String of Ears in the Belt slot is the most effective means of increasing your Damage Reduction on this build, while also providing essential Life Leech. This means the acceptable loss of a Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint from dropping Arachnid Mesh. Additionally, Shaftstop is a possible Body Armor option if you are willing to forgo Enigma.
  • Maximum Life: Because this build struggles to reach high % Damage Reduction, it is highly recommended (even more so than on most Hardcore builds) to use as many Life-granting Charms as possible.
  • Thundergod's Vigor (Swap): Swap your Belt out for Thundergod's Vigor when farming Worldstone Keep or "Teleporting" to the Throne of Destruction to avoid getting destroyed by the Burning Souls that often spawn there. Loss of Damage Reduction or Faster Cast Rate from swapping is acceptable here.
  • Stacking Resistances: If possible, and when necessary, make sure your Fire/Lightning/and Cold Resistances are stacked beyond their default maximum values of 75 each (175 total Resistances in Hell) to guard against Elite monsters with Conviction Aura. Stacking these Resistances 85 past their 75 default maximums (260 total Resistance) completely negates the Conviction Aura of any enemy. When choosing to stack Resistances, keep in mind which primary damage type(s) the monsters deal in the area you want to farm. High X Resist +x% or All Resistances +x granting Grand and Small Charms can shore up your Resistances for this purpose. Resistances on Jewelry also help. Chains of Honor is a possible Body Armor option for stacking Resistances on this build if you are willing to forgo Enigma. Ignoring possible gear changes, the Dream Paladin can rely on his Salvation and Resist Lightning Auras to counter enemy Conviction; however, using these Auras results in decreased Damage output.

Stat Point Changes:

  • A Hardcore Dream Paladin's Stat Point allocation is the same as for the standard version of the build (see the "Attributes" section above).

Skill Point Changes:

  • After maxing Sacrifice, put all leftover and future Skill Points into Holy Shield instead of Zeal to boost your Chance to Block and Defense.

See the "Hardcore" Build Variant below for additional suggestions and visuals.

Build Variants

High Mobility

Setup
This variant prioritizes Teleport mobility. Achieving the 75% Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint on Weapon-Swap, the "High Mobility" Dream Paladin travels to and through Farming Spots quicker than the standard version of the build. In areas which require a great deal of Teleport travel, such as The Pit and Worldstone Keep, this means higher farming efficiency. This setup sacrifices a decent amount of Damage for this purpose, however, making it less effective in High Player Count games or /Players5-8 in Single Player.

Mercenary
In order to maintain maximum Attack Speed on the "High Mobility" variant, use an Act 1 Mercenary with Faith for its Fanaticism Aura. Vampire Gaze and Shaftstop provide this Mercenary with a much needed 50% Damage Reduction and Life Leech.

Skills
The "High Mobility" Dream Paladin uses the same Skill Point distribution as the standard build.

Put 1 Skill Point into each of the following Skills:
1. Zeal (Max Last)
2. Charge
3. Holy Shield
4. Cleansing
5. Vigor

Max out the following Skills in this order:
1. Resist Lightning
2. Salvation
3. Conviction (Till Level 25)
4. Sacrifice
5. Zeal

Put additional Skill Points into Holy Shield for increased duration, Chance to Block, and Defense if preferred or as needed.

Use the Scroll Bar to see Skill Point Progression

Attributes
In general, for all Dream Paladin variants, put enough Stat Points into Strength to wear all of your gear, put enough Points into Dexterity to achieve maximum Chance to Block (75%), and then dump all remaining Stat Points into Vitality.

Hybrid

Setup
The "Hybrid" Dream Paladin uses Hand of Justice and Dragon to have a Level 30 Holy Fire Aura on top of the Level 30 Holy Shock Aura provided by double Dreams. With both high Fire and Lightning Damage on top of the Physical Damage provided by the Hand of Justice itself, this variant encounters zero issues with Immunities. A Teleport Charges Amulet provides this variant with much needed mobility and repositioning ability given that we aren't using Enigma. Achieving the 48% Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint with the help of items such as Trang-Oul's Claws improves the smoothness of Teleport repositioning on the main weapon loadout.

Mercenary
In order to maintain maximum Attack Speed on the "Hybrid" variant, use an Act 1 Mercenary with Faith for its Fanaticism Aura. Vampire Gaze and Shaftstop provide this Mercenary with a much needed 50% Damage Reduction and Life Leech.

Skills
For the "Hybrid" variant, max the Holy Fire Synergy Resist Fire after maxing Salvation. This will greatly boost the power of the Level 30 Holy Fire Aura provided by Hand of Justice + Dragon on this build. Also, put 5-10 Skill Points into Holy Shield to increase this essential Skill's duration, Chance to Block, and Defense bonuses. These changes mean that we can't max Sacrifice and Zeal as on the standard version of the Dream Paladin.

Ubers

Setup
The "Ubers" variant of the Dream Paladin specializes in defeating the Uber Bosses, including mini-Ubers such as Lilith. While you can use something approximating the "Standard" variant for defeating the Ubers, this variant provides a number of important stats that make killing these challenging foes a little easier/more reliable. Crushing Blow, Open Wounds, Damage Reduction, Resistances, and Life are priority stats on this build. We can use a Teleport Charges Amulet for mobility to justify using Chains of Honor for more Damage and All Resistances. While Last Wish is ideal in that it provides a source of Life Tap for Life sustain, Fade for Damage Reduction, All Resistances, and Curse Duration Reduction, and high Crushing Blow for quicker kills, there are other easier to acquire item(s) that can fill these roles (see "Gear Options" above). Pre-buffing Enchant with Demon Limb is a good strategy here. Thundergod's Vigor and stacked Lightning Resistance allows this build to tank Uber Mephisto.

Mercenary
In order to maintain maximum Attack Speed on the "Ubers" variant, use an Act 1 Mercenary with Faith for its Fanaticism Aura. Vampire Gaze and Shaftstop provide this Mercenary with a much needed 50% Damage Reduction and Life Leech.

Skills
The "Ubers" Dream Paladin uses the same Skill Point distribution as the standard build.

Hardcore

Setup
For the "Hardcore" mode variant, we aim for decent Damage Reduction, high Defense, and maximum Chance to Block (75%) to guard against taking extreme amounts of Physical Damage. Additionally, we overcap our Resistances beyond the natural cap of 75% to keep them high or capped under the influence of hostile Conviction. For detailed information about the "Hardcore" Dream Paladin variant gear options/changes, consult the "Hardcore" section above. All recommended Hardcore changes are visually displayed in the planner to the right.

Mercenary
The "Hardcore" variant Mercenary is a Might Mercenary with The Reaper's Toll, Treachery, and Guillaume's Face.
Note: For additional safety, use a Holy Freeze Mercenary for the extra Crowd Control it provides, or a Defiance Mercenary for a large Defense boost. These options will result in a somewhat lower Damage output, however.

Skills
After maxing Sacrifice, put all leftover and future Skill Points into Holy Shield instead of Zeal to boost your Chance to Block and Defense on the "Hardcore" Dream Paladin.

Standard

Setup
This is the "Standard" Best in Slot (BiS) Dream Paladin featured in the beginning of the guide. It is the balanced "jack-of-all-trades" version of the Dream Paladin, capable of performing the most tasks, well. This variant is the point of comparison for all other variants. It carefully balances solid Damage, Magic Find, and Teleport mobility on Weapon-Swap.

Mercenary
The "Standard" Dream Paladin Mercenary is a Might Mercenary with The Reaper's Toll, Treachery, and Guillaume's Face.

Attributes
In general, for all Dream Paladin variants, put enough Stat Points into Strength to wear all of your gear, put enough Points into Dexterity to achieve maximum Chance to Block (75%), and then dump all remaining Stat Points into Vitality.

Mechanics

Strength / Dexterity Bug

  • The Strength or Dexterity Bug refers to a state where an item "holds itself".
  • This means that you wouldn't reach the minimum requirements of the item without the added Strength and/or Dexterity of the item itself.
  • You have to follow the following steps to achieve this (Example: Stormshield):
    • Get to 126 Strength with Attributes and gear.
    • Gain 30 Strength from other sources like Jewelry or Charms to meet the requirement for Stormshield.
    • Equip Stormshield and remove the items you used to meet the requirements. It "holds itself" now.

Teleport

  • Teleport instantly moves you to a selected square on the visible screen in which you can stand. The game tries to to place you within a small radius around your cursor even if it would be impeded normally.
  • Teleport is not obstructed by walls or other impediments but can fail if your cursor is not completely passed those impediments when cast. Your Mercenary and Minions are teleported with you, Traps do not.
  • Certain Minions in large quantities can become “stuck” in position after teleporting. Move away from that position to give them the chance to spread out.
  • You can “extend” the visible screen by opening UI-windows like the Inventory or the Character screen. Continuously cast Teleport and drag your mouse to the edge of your screen.
  • The Mana cost of Teleport decreases with additional Skill Levels down to 1 Mana per cast.
  • You can use “ESC” to open the menu in single player to pause the game after a Teleport to determine if you are safe.
  • Teleport casting speed is affected by the Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint that you achieve with your gear.

Summary

  • The Dream Paladin requires both a Dream Helmet and a Dream Shield. This build does not work without these items.
  • Teleport using the Faster Cast Rate gear on your Weapon-Swap.
  • Make sure to keep Conviction active at all times while attacking with Zeal on your main weapon loadout.
  • Take advantage of Holy Shield: put enough Stat Points into Dexterity to achieve maximum Chance to Block (75%) with Holy Shield active.
  • The Dream Paladin can farm virtually anything with ease. With both strong Magic Find and incredible Lightning-Physical hybrid Damage, this build dominates nearly every Max Level Area. Even farming Uber Bosses for Hellfire Torches is highly effective on this Tesladin.
