Blizzard Sorceress Guide

Blizzard Sorceress

Introduction

The Blizzard Sorceress has been one of the most beloved characters to start your journey into the world of Diablo 2 Resurrected. With very little item investment, the Blizzard Sorceress is capable of destroying Andariel, Mephisto and Pindleskin, some of the most popular early solo farming bosses. With a decent Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint and the use of the Skill Teleport, you get to these bosses in no time. The Blizzard Sorceress, also known as the Blizz Sorc, is somewhat difficult with low survivability in some stages, but is unrivaled as the best Ladder Starter with its speed and versatility.
This build uses Cold Damage which is a great form of Crowd Control as it Chills or Freezes mobs which either slows or stops them in their tracks. However, it does not work well with mobs that are Cold Immune. The main damage against these monster types comes from Static Field and your Mercenary, until you get to super late game where you use Fire Ball to kill Immunities.

Damage

Blizzard* is your main Damage Skill. That casts in a square on your targeted area. Within that square, icy spikes will drop in a pattern. Mobs you want to deal damage to ideally will move around within that square. Note: Blizzard has a cooldown that can not be reduced by any means.

Ice Blast* shoots a medium-sized Ice-Ball that deals Cold Damage to the target it explodes on. It can be used as a supplement damage source on a single target during the cooldown of Blizzard.

Glacial Spike* shoots an arrow shaped ice projectile in the direction of your cursor. On impact, it explodes into a small area, and freezes enemies with Area Of Effect Cold Damage. It can be used as a Utility Skill with mass freezing the area, or used as your secondary damage.

Fire Ball* shoots a large Fire-Ball that deals Fire Damage towards your target and explodes onto the first target it hits, dealing Area of Effect (AoE) damage. It is used at higher levels when you have more Skill Points against Cold Immune mobs, and works great in combination with Infinity.

* Faster Cast Rate Skills (FCR)

Utility

Teleport* lets you cover large distances over almost any gap and wall on the map. This is what gives the Sorceress its huge advantage early on.

Telekinesis* lets you use Waypoints, Town Portals, your stash as well as pick up utility items such as Potions and Scrolls from a distance. You can also use it to Knockback mobs and keep them stunned.

Static Field* is a very powerful Utility Skill that uses Lightning Damage to weaken enemies by a large amount. It reduces the target's health by 25% of its current health. You can bring a monster’s Life down to 1 Life in Normal, 33% in Nightmare and 50% in Hell.

Frozen Armor* protects your Character with an icy armor that will freeze enemies who use melee attacks on you. Ranged monsters are not affected by this at all.

Warmth* gives you some passive Mana Regeneration. It doesn't amount to much, but it's only a 1 Skill Point Investment.

Frost Nova* shoots a ring of ice around you, chilling targets nearby in range. This Skill can be used in niche situations to buy yourself more time for your next move.

Cold Mastery* boosts the Cold Damage dealt to all of your enemies by piercing their Cold Resistances.

* Faster Cast Rate Skills (FCR)
* Skills that do NOT utilize either IAS or FCR

Farming Spots

The areas below are well suited for this build to farm efficiently. While this build can also farm other areas, we’ve selected these specific areas to make the most use of the build’s strengths. Please take special note of the danger level, clear speed, item types, and Immunities that define these areas.

Anything that has a in the "Starter" column can be farmed with the Starter Variant.
While there are other Farming Spots in the game, some Builds struggle to efficiently farm those Areas. This may be because the Monsters in the Area are Immune to your primary Damage type, or the Build lacks mobility to quickly progress to its objectives.

Mercenary

Your Mercenary can serve an incredibly important role to the overall success of your build. Whether it’s serving as a front line tank, bringing a pivotal Aura to your arsenal, or employing Physical Damage to kill monsters with an Immunity to your skill set.

Act 2 Desert Mercenary
The Act 2 Desert Mercenary can be hired from Greiz. Note: There are no limitations on hiring this Mercenary, meaning that you can hire one at Level 1.
He can be equipped with a Spear or a Polearm, a Body Armor and a Helmet.
Every Act 2 Mercenary has access to an Aura and uses Jab as his base Attack. The Aura will activate once the Mercenary has engaged in combat and will remain active between traveling to and from town. The Auras available are based on what difficulty you hire the Mercenary from.

Might Infinity

We recommend the Might Aura version, as it provides us with a Mercenary that can deal with enemies that are immune to our main Damage source.
Infinity will provide us with a massive damage boost as it reduces the enemies Resistances and Defense due to its Conviction Aura. This Aura is also capable of breaking some Immunities.

The Mercenary is hard to keep alive until you have the minimum gear recommended in this guide. To help survive various scenarios, remember you can drag Healing Potions onto the portrait, or shift + 1/2/3/4 to directly feed them a Healing Potion from your belt. The Mercenary also gains bonus Resistances from Thawing Potions and Antidote Potions.

If your Mercenary dies in battle, you can revive them from any of the Mercenary NPCs in each Act. This does come with an increasing cost, capping at 50,000 Gold. So keep that in mind and decide if the Mercenary is currently worth the cost.

Playstyle

General:

  • Cast Frozen Armor prior to entering combat situations to maintain it's duration.
  • Use Teleport to move from place to place, to reposition yourself, and your Mercenary. Your Mercenary stands a better chance of staying alive and taking on Cold Immunes when using Teleport. He can act as a first line of defense after you Teleport, catching incoming damage you would have taken otherwise.
  • Use Telekinesis any time you can on Waypoints, Town Portals, your stash and for utility items such as Potions and Scrolls from a distance. These uses give lots of small-time saves that add up. In addition, you can also use it to Knockback mobs and keep them stunned. This is useful to keep Cold Immunes stunned while your Mercenary takes them down.
  • Against melee monsters, cast Blizzard between yourself and the enemy. That way the melee targets will walk into your Blizzard which will allow it to deal a lot of damage and slow them down.
  • Against ranged monsters, you need to cast Blizzard on top of the packs and move a little away from them. The range monsters move towards you when you get out of their range, causing them to get hit more often. Remember, kiting is key with Blizzard!
  • Against dangerous or numerous mobs use Glacial Spike freezes most everything and deals great amounts of Area of Effect (AOE) damage.
  • Use Ice Blast to deal damage against single target bosses or mobs.
  • Use Static Field to bring down the Life of your enemies quickly. This is great for all types of Bosses that are not Lightning Immune.
  • Before your target die, switch to your setup with more x% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items, especially bosses!
  • Don't be too close to your enemies as this build is squishy and can either get stuck in Faster Hit Recovery or die.
  • Avoid killing mobs over non-walkable ground if possible, as they won't drop items.

Immunities:

  • Use your Mercenary in combination with Telekinesis to keep Immune monsters stunned.
  • If you do not have Infinity equipped on your Mercenary, purchase a Lower Resist Charge Wand from Nightmare Drognan, this is great for breaking some Immune and highly Resistant monsters. Repair this Wand as needed using Gold or the Chipped Gem + Ort Rune Horadric Cube recipe.

Late-Game:

  • At the beginning of each run, buff yourself by swapping to Call to Arms and cast Battle Command 2 times, Battle Orders, swap back to your main setup and cast Frozen Armor. Make sure these buffs stay active all the time as they are essential to your survivability.
  • At higher Levels use Fire Ball against Cold Immunes in combination with Infinity and your Mercenary to take them out quickly.

Breakpoints

For more information on the mechanics involved, check out our in-depth Resource: Breakpoints.

All builds rely on specific Breakpoints for effectiveness throughout the game. Meeting Breakpoints for Cast Rate, Hit Recovery, and Block Rate increases the rate of casting spells, recovering from big Damage, and blocks by 1 Frame per Breakpoint.

Faster Cast Rate (FCR)
Faster Cast Rate controls how fast our Character casts spells. In this build, we aim for 105% Faster Cast Rate, which is achieved with the suggested gear. Note: Faster Cast Rate only controls the animation speed of the Character, and not any internal or global Cooldowns your spells have.

Cast Rate Breakpoints

Increased Attack Speed (IAS)
We do not target a specific Attack Speed Breakpoint. We do not rely on attacks to deal damage.

Faster Hit Recovery (FHR)
Faster Hit Recovery controls how fast our Character finishes the Hit Recovery animation. In this build, we aim for 60% Faster Hit Recovery, which is achieved with the suggested gear and Charms.

Hit Recovery Breakpoints

Faster Block Rate (FBR)
We do not target a specific Block Rate Breakpoint. We do not rely on Chance to Block in this build.

Faster Run Walk (FRW)
There are no Breakpoints for Faster Run / Walk. With the recommended gear, you will reach 25% Faster Run / Walk.

Hardcore

For all Hardcore gameplay, your primary concern is increasing your Resistances, Damage Reduction, Chance to Block and Maximum Life. This can mean sacrificing overall power level for a more secure playstyle.

This build can become Hardcore viable with key changes to the Skills, Stat Point allocation, and items. Review the changes below before building this character, as they may differ significantly from the normal build. See the "Hardcore" Variant for an example.

Stat Point changes:

  • We put enough into Strength to wear gear, as well as enough Stat Points into Dexterity to maintain 50% Chance to Block with Stormshield. Everything else just goes into Vitality.

Item Changes:

  • Be sure to keep your Resistances over capped against things like Conviction.
  • Crown of Ages
  • Stormshield
  • Sandstorm Trek
  • Verdungo's Hearty Cord
  • The Oculus is generally dangerous because of it's x% Chance to cast Level 1 Teleport when struck. Some options here are either Death's Fathom or Heart of the Oak

Build Variants

Starter

Setup
The Blizzard Sorceress is strong enough to rely on a few key Runewords, and then fill the rest of her gear with high Resistances, Faster Hit Recovery, and any sources of +x to All Skills that you find while farming. Our Spirit, Stealth, Lore, and Ancients' Pledge make up the core of this build. This gives us the core Stats we need to successfully farm any of the "Starter" indicated Farming Spots.

Mercenary
The same thing goes for the Mercenary as it does for you. Do the best you can with what you find, focusing on mostly Resistances and Life. Insight is a pretty easy Runeword to find and farm that gives a great amount of damage and Quality of Life with Meditation. Get the Might Aura Mercenary, it works great for extra damage against Cold Immunes.

Skills
The Starter Variant of the Blizzard Sorceress focuses most of her Skill Points in the Cold Skill Tree:

Put 1 Skill Point into each of the following Skills:
1. Warmth
2. Static Field
3. Telekinesis
4. Teleport
5. Frozen Armor
6. Cold Mastery

Max out the following Skills in this order:
1. Blizzard
2. Glacial Spike
3. Ice Blast
4. Ice Bolt

Attributes
In this build we only allocate as many Stat Points to Strength as we need to equip all of our gear. Put the remaining Stat Points into Vitality.

Standard

Setup
There are plenty of gear options for this build, the most important thing to remember is to keep your Faster Cast Rate Breakpoint at either 63% or 105%. With more Skills, Cold Skill Damage, and Magic Find being a focus here, this is a well-rounded build. Another gear setup while maintaining the playstyle of this variant is: Chains of Honor Dusk Shroud, Magefist, Arachnid Mesh, and The Stone of Jordan.

Mercenary
This setup for your Mercenary is the same one shown in the Mercenary section. Might Aura works great for extra damage against Cold Immunes. Infinity Giant Thresher for breaking some Cold Immunes and piecing Resistances while Andariel's Visage, and Fortitude Sacred Armor fill in everything else you need from damage to survivability. Very standard stuff.

Attributes

Magic Find

Setup
This variant is set up to sacrifice all big damage items for items with x% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items (MF). This means that this build's main focus is killing as many Elite groups as possible on a lower player count. 105% Faster Cast Rate is targeted for accomplishing this task. Before your targets die, be sure to use the Gemmed Superior Monarch with 4 Ist Runes for additional MF on swap. If you need more damage, you can replace the Shimmering Small Charm of Good Luck with Chilling Grand Charm of Vita.
Note: If you need to get back to town, we use the Scroll of Town Portal on the Belt.

Mercenary
The Mercenary can either go with this setup to maximize the amount of x% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items or go for something standard like on the other variants, based on your playstyle. Remember that when your Mercenary kills something his MF + your MF stack together. Item choices include Stealskull Casque, Skullder's Ire Balrog Skin, and Infinity Giant Thresher.

Skills
The Skill Tree here aligns with the final Skill Tree of the Standard Blizzard Sorceress.

Put 1 Skill Point into each of the following Skills:
1. Warmth
2. Static Field
3. Telekinesis
4. Teleport
5. Frozen Armor

Set Build

Setup
This is the classic variant that has been used for ages. It is fairly cheap, with the most expensive items being Tal Rasha's Guardianship and Tal Rasha's Adjudication. It is fairly well-rounded and your character glows, what more could you ask for! Important things to note are to keep a good Faster Cast Rate (FCR) Breakpoint, either 63% or 105% FCR. For Faster Hit Recovery (FHR) it is fairly easy to hit the 86% FHR Breakpoint as you will only need 6% more from wearing the full Set plus Spirit Monarch.

Mercenary
This setup for your Mercenary is the same one shown in the Mercenary section. Might Aura works great for extra damage against Cold Immunes. Infinity Giant Thresher for breaking some Cold Immunes and piecing Resistances while Andariel's Visage and Fortitude Sacred Armor fill in everything else you need from damage to survivability.

Damage

Setup
This variant is the ultimate "glass cannon," we have big damage and not a great amount of survivability. We want to focus on going really fast and having that be our main strategy for survivability. Things to note are trying to get your Faster Hit Recovery up to the 86% Breakpoint and Faster Cast Rate at 105% or at least 63%. Important items for this variant include Nightwing's Veil, Death's Fathom, Ormus' Robes, and Snowclash.
Note: If you need to get back to town, we use the Scroll of Town Portal on the Belt.

Mercenary
This setup for your Mercenary is the same one shown in the Mercenary section. Might Aura works great for extra damage against Cold Immunes. Hardcore

Setup
This variant is what you want to build if you just don't want to die. We focus on having the maximum amount of Damage Reduction (50%) while stacking life and at least 63% Faster Cast Rate, preferably 105%. Faster Hit Recovery is big here, as we are trying to target 86% Breakpoint as best we can. We also aim for 50% Chance to Block by adding enough Dexterity to reach this. The most impactful items for a build like this are Stormshield, Crown of Ages, Sandstorm Trek and sometimes Verdungo's Hearty Cord.

Skills
You can use remaining Skill Points to spec Energy Shield for a boost to survivability, or use an item with +x to Energy Shield [Sorceress Only] such as Memory. Otherwise, we use the Standard Skill Tree.

Mechanics

Teleport

  • Teleport instantly moves you to a selected square on the visible screen in which you can stand. The game will try to to place you within a small radius around your cursor even if it would be impeded normally.
  • Teleport is not obstructed by walls or other impediments but can fail if your cursor is not completely passed those impediments when cast. Your Mercenary and Minions will be teleported with you, Traps will not.
  • Certain Minions in large quantities can become “stuck” in position after teleporting. Move away from that position to give them the chance to spread out.
  • You can “extend” the visible screen by opening UI-windows like the Inventory or the Character screen. Continuously cast Teleport and drag your mouse to the edge of your screen.
  • The Mana cost of Teleport decreases with additional Skill Levels down to 1 Mana per cast.
  • You can use “ESC” to open the menu in single player to pause the game after a Teleport to determine if you are safe.

Blizzard

  • The speed of this Skill is based on Cast Rate.
  • Creates a damaging blizzard in a circle centered on cursor location when the Skill is cast.
    • The circle's Radius: 4.66 yards
  • Size 2 shards begin to fall every 4 frames (0.16 seconds) for the entire duration of the blizzard.
    • A Size 2 target will be hit by 3 shards on average per blizzard.

We hope you enjoy this build! It can be very fun and very rewarding, especially once you practice it. There is nothing like staring down your frozen enemies at close range and turning them into tiny ice cubes!

Good luck!
