Amazon Leveling Guide

Introduction

The Amazon Leveling Guide provides you with all the necessary information to get your favorite Character started!
Not every Skill is suitable to be used during early leveling for three reasons:

  • Only a number of Skills work well without any previously farmed gear.
  • A lot of builds lack damage during the leveling phase. It can become a big struggle or even straight up impossible to progress starting with an end game build.
  • Some builds have a hard time transitioning into hell due to Immunities.

We provide you with step by step Skill trees and easily accessible items that help you in your play through. Additionally, you get tips and insights on how to deal with Immunities and the more difficult fights.

Gear used in this guide
Poison Javelin
Exploding Arrow
Lightning Fury
Charged Strike

At the end of this guide you'll have a Level 75 Amazon that used 1 out of the 3 respecs the game provides. You can use these to transition into your build of choice. If you like the final Skill build, check out the Lightning Fury Amazon Guide, which seamlessly transitions from this guide.

Skill Trees

The Amazon Leveling Guide utilizes Poison Javelin and Exploding Arrow in Normal and transitions into Lightning Fury and Charged Strike for Nightmare and Hell.

Hint: Below the Skill trees you have a slider which you can move around to see the Skill progression!

Level 1 to 32-36

Before the Amazon hits Level 6, there are no Skill options that makes her significantly stronger. Using a not so straight-forward Skill Point allocation, we can prepare for extra Fire Damage at Level 12, without sacrificing any damage until then:

  • Level 2-4: Fire Arrow
  • Den of Evil: Magic Arrow
  • Level 5: Save Skill Point
  • Level 6: Poison Javelin and Multiple Shot
  • Level 7-11: Poison Javelin
  • Level 12+: Exploding Arrow from Level-Up Skill Points and Fire Arrow using Skill Points from Quest rewards.

Exploding Arrow is going to carry you through the game until you respec into Lightning Fury and Charged Strike. Exploding Arrow is very strong and can be used all the way to Nightmare Act 3. We recommend to respec on Level 36 at the latest!

Level 32-36 to 75

Skill Tree until Level 75

Before we respec we need to prepare some gear. Check out the "Assemble the Build"-Section to find your shopping list.

Put as many Skill Points as you can into Charged Strike and Lightning Fury. Skill Level 5 is your target for Pierce.
Note: We are not going to use every Skill Point we have at the respec. This is not a mistake! Put Skill Points into Charged Strike and Lightning Fury simultaniously while you are Leveling up!
When allocated propperly, you run out of remaining Skill Points when Charged Strike is maxed out. Continue to max out Lightning Fury. After that you can start to go for Valkyrie to make your journey through Hell easier. Now you are ready to max out Lightning Bolt and start putting Skill Points into Power Strike for a lot more damage on your main Skills Charged Strike and Lightning Fury.
Change for group play: If you are playing in a group you can skip Valkyrie and put the Skill Points you save into Lightning Bolt and Power Strike to gain even more Damage.

Playstyle

During her Leveling phase the Amazon goes through multiple playstyles. This section describes how you should play within the stages.

Before Level 6 (Throw or Fire Arrow)

Until you reach Level 6, you have two equally bad options of gameplay. Both options feel very slow, as you are killing monsters one by one…

Option 1) Buy a ton of Javelins from Charsi and Throw them at your enemies until they die.
Tip: If you keep at least 1 Javelin left in the stack, you can repair the full quantity at Charsi for 1 Gold, instead of buying a new stack. This can save you some Gold.

Option 2) Buy a Hunter’s Bow and Arrows from Charsi and use Fire Arrow against your enemies. This option costs quite a bit of Mana, so be prepared to buy some Minor Mana Potions from Akara.

Level 6 - 12 (Poison Javelin)

Phew... The worst is over...
At Level 6 you unlock the Amazon's first Area of Effect Skill - Poison Javelin. This Skill requires you to have Javelins equipped and costs you a moderate amount of Mana

When you throw a Poison Javelin a Poison Cloud appears in the path it travels. To utilize this Skill optimally you want to throw to the side of your enemies and lure them into the cloud. Against ranged monsters you need to throw the Poison Javelin as close to the enemy as possible. Lure them in by running out of their attack range. If you throw the Poison Javelin too far away from them, the Poison Cloud disperses before you can lure them into it.

Another way of using this Skill is to throw Poison Javelin in the direction you are running. This is especially effective against fast moving melee monsters that follow you into the Poison Cloud.
Note: You actually get Experience from monsters that die to your Poison Damage in previous floors of multi floor areas. This can be utilized to move quickly through the Forgotten Tower.

Level 12+ (Exploding Arrow)

At Level 12 you get access to Exploding Arrow. This Skill is very powerful but has a high Mana cost, so be prepared to use a lot of Mana Potions. Try to shoot Exploding Arrows into tightly packed monster groups. You want to make use of the Area of Effect as much as you can.

Continue to use Poison Javelin as supplementary damage source. Doing so requires you to use both of your Weapon Slots. Your main Weapon slot should have a Hunter's Bow and Arrows which is required to use Exploding Arrow, while the second Weapon slot should have your Javelins that are required to use Poison Javelin. Switch between both Weapon slots to keep your damage output as high as possible. Poison Javelin is strong enough to kill monsters all the way into Act 3 Normal.

Note: Exploding Arrow bypasses the "hit check", so it always deals damage to monsters you shoot at. This means you don't need Attack Rating. The explosion is triggered when the projectile reaches a target or hits a wall.

Level 32-36 to 75 (Lightning Fury / Charged Strike)

After the respec is where the real fun begins.
A quick Note before we jump into the gameplay: These Skills do not require any form of Attack Rating.

Lightning Fury is our main Skill that is used against large groups of monsters. In Nightmare, no Skill can rival Lightning Fury's power in blowing up monster masses. The more, the merrier. Due to the built-in mechanics of splitting into multiple projectiles on hit in combination with Pierce, Lightning Fury simply ricochets within large monster groups. Only the "luckiest" monsters at the edge have a chance to survive... But not for long.

In the rare occasions in which you get overwhelmed, use Decoy and Valkyrie as a distraction to get some distance between you and your enemies. Be aware that the Amazon has the slowest Cast Rate out of all Characters, so using these abilities takes a fairly long time.

Charged Strike excels in dealing damage against single targets. Smaller monster groups also crumble against Charged Strike. In the late game this Skill is unrivaled in terms of single target damage. It is a melee Skill however, requiring you to get close to your enemies!

Slow Missiles can be a very powerful tool when you are facing a lot of ranged enemies. Slowing down enemies projectiles can lead to a massive amount of projectiles on your screen. Make sure to kill the affected monsters as fast as possible!

Keep Yew Wand of Lower Resistance in your second weapon slot or at the very least in your inventory / Horadric Cube. Use its Lower Resist Charges against Act bosses, tanky monsters, and Lightning Immunes. This greatly increases your effective damage against the first two. On Lightning Immunes you'll find out that some Immunities can be broken by the Yew Wand of Lower Resistance, making them vulnerable against your only damage type.

One hurdle that a lot of builds face are areas with lots of Immune monsters. For this build, Stony Fields, Maggot Lair, Spider Forest, Flayer Jungle, and Travincal can be especially annoying. The “trick” is to avoid them as much as possible. In some places your only choice is having a Gnarled Staff of Teleportation to skip them entirely (e.g. Maggot Lair). Other areas can be re-rolled to reduce the amount of Lightning Immunes (Spider Forest, Flayer Jungle). In some places, you can't avoid Lightning Immune monsters. Try to run past them and don’t waste too many Lower Resist Charges to kill them. Recharging Charges is extremely Gold intensive.

In Chaos Sanctuary in Hell you have to face at least one Lightning Immune monster, Grand Vizier of Chaos at the top left Seal. With specific Boss Affixes (Lightning Enchanted, Magic Resistant) you're unable to break his Immunity. This can be true for all 3 Seal bosses (Grand Vizier of Chaos, Lord de Seis, and Infector of Souls). Unless your Mercenary is rocking some powerful Physical Damage Weapon, it is going to be faster to restart the Chaos Sanctuary. The three Seal bosses roll new Affixes when starting a new game. It might take some tries before you can defeat all 3 of them.

In the Ancients fight in Act 5 you have to face Madawc, who is naturally Lightning Immune. You most likely have to re-roll him a couple of times by using a Scroll of Town Portal after starting the fight, as you can’t kill him with some Affixes (namely: Lightning Enchanted, Magic Resistant). Even if you can break his Lightning Immunity, he can sometimes still have super high Lightning Resistances. The Ancients spawn with a set of gear, which can increase their Lightning Resistance to near Immune %. A mercenary with Strength is highly recommended. Keeping him alive however, might prove difficult. Use the Mercenary glitch before you start the fight to make this easier! This makes him "invisible" to a lot of enemies.

Miscellaneous

Assembling the Build

This guide only uses items you can easily get during your playthrough. In this section we show you where and why you get the items that are used.
Warning: When we are talking about Socketed items for Runewords, be aware that the vendors can sell Magic Items with 2 Sockets. Runewords do NOT work in Magic Items!

Javelin:
Where?
- Buy Javelin from Charsi in Normal Act 1.
Why?
- We use Javelin all the way to Level 12.
- Javelins are a requirement for Throw and Poison Javelin.

Hunter’s Bow with Rubies in Sockets:
Where?
- Buy a Hunter’s Bow with 2 or 3 Sockets from Charsi in Normal Act 1.
- Rubies can only be found as random drops in the wilderness, or from Gem Shrines.
Tip: Using a Gem Shrine with a Ruby in your inventory upgrades it to the higher tier of Gem. This adds more Fire Damage per Socket.
Why?
- Rubies in a Bow significantly increases your damage output with Exploding Arrow. E.g. Chipped Ruby -> Flawed Ruby

Stealth:
Where?
- Buy a 2 Socket Body Armor from Charsi in Normal Act 1.
- Find the Runes from The Countess in Normal Act 1, The Forgotten Tower (Black Marsh).
Why?
- Stealth is arguably the strongest Runeword. We are using it on literally every Leveling guide.
- 25 % Faster Run/Walk and 25% Faster Hit Recovery bring significant Quality of Life, and this Body Armor should not be replaced until the end of this guide. The only exception to this is: Using Peace against Act bosses later on.

Zephyr Hunter's Bow:
Where?
- You can buy a Hunter's Bow from Charsi in Normal Act 1.
- Find the Eth Rune from The Countess in Normal Act 1, The Forgotten Tower (Black Marsh).
- For the Ort Rune we have multiple ways of getting it:
a) Farm for 3 Ral Runes from The Countess in Normal Act 1, The Forgotten Tower (Black Marsh). Use the Horadric Cube to transmute them into an Ort Rune.
b) Use the Ort Rune that you get from Act 5, Quest 2.
Why?
Zephyr provides us with 25% Increased Attack Speed and 25% Faster Run/Walk. The Increased Attack Speed increases your damage output with Exploding Arrow. 25% Faster Run/Walk helps keeping you out of harm's way, and progressing quickly.

Javelin of Alacrity / Maiden Javelin of Swiftness:
Where?
- Buy Javelin of Alacrity from Malah in Normal Act 5. A minimum Character Level of 20 is required.
- Buy Maiden Javelin of Swiftness from Malah in Normal Act 5. A minimum Character Level of 29 is required.
Why?
- You want to reach specific Attack Speed Breakpoints for throwing Javelin. These are at 30% or 50% Increased Attack Speed. You reach these in combination with Gloves.
Why not Maiden Javelin?
Hitting the Attack Speed Breakpoints is very important. Getting Amazon Javelins with the necessary Increased Attack Speed is not very likely.

Heavy Gloves of Readiness / Heavy Gloves of Alacrity:
Where?
- Buy Heavy Gloves of Readiness from Charsi or Gheed in Nightmare Act 1. A minimum Character Level of 15 is required.
- Buy Heavy Gloves of Alacrity from Charsi or Gheed in Nightmare Act 1. A minimum Character Level of 37 is required.
Why?
- As mentioned above, we combine the Gloves with +% Increased Attack Speed and Javelins +% Increased Attack Speed to hit the Breakpoints at 30% / 50% Increased Attack Speed.
Note: You can skip the Heavy Gloves of Readiness if you get Javelin of Swiftness.

Rhyme Bone Shield:
Where?
- Buy a Bone Shield from Drognan in Normal Act 2.
- Find the Runes from The Countess in Nightmare Act 1, The Forgotten Tower (Black Marsh).
Why?
- The “Cannot be Frozen”-Affix simply makes this Shield the best in slot for quite some time.
- The Affix 25% Better chance of getting Magic Items (MF) never hurts.
- Our Hardcore friends also benefit from the 20% Increased Chance of Blocking to add a defensive layer to their build.

Lore Cap:
Where?
- Buy a Cap or Skull Cap from Charsi in Normal Act 1.
- Find the Runes from The Countess in Nightmare Act 1, The Forgotten Tower (Black Marsh).
Why?
Lightning Fury and Charged Strike benefit a lot from +x to All Skills on our gear. Lore provides +1 to All Skills and Lightning Resist +30% which makes this Helmet a strong offensive and defensive option for this item slot.

Gnarled Staff of Teleportation:
Where?
- Buy the Staff of Teleportation from Ormus in Normal Act 3. A minimum Character Level of 19 is required.
Why?
- A Staff of Teleportation provides you with higher mobility. We utilize this to get past moats, rivers, and other blockades. In the Hell difficulty we can use it to skip the Lightning Immune monsters (Most notably in Maggot Lair).
Tip: Buy the Staff of Teleportation before you hit Level 24. The Staff has a Level requirement of 24 which means they appear with a red background in the vendor screen. This speeds up the process of shopping for it a lot!
Hardcore warning: When you switch to the Weapon slot with the Staff of Teleportation you lose a lot of Resistances and your Chance to Block. The Amazon also has the worst Cast Rate, meaning each cast of Teleport takes a significant amount of time.

Wand of Lower Resistance:
Where?
- Buy Wand of Lower Resistance from Malah in Normal Act 5, Akara in Nightmare Act 1, or Drognan in Nightmare Act 2. A minimum Character Level of 31 is required.
Why?
- Lower Resist is very important for this build to break the Lightning Immune monsters you have to face in Hell.
- You can also use Lower Resist to increase your damage against Act bosses and tanky monsters.
Tip: Buy the Wand of Lower Resistance before you hit Level 36. The Wand has a Level requirement of 36 which means they appear with a red background in the vendor screen. This speeds up the process of shopping for it a lot!

Strength Spear (OPTIONAL):
Where?
- Buy Spear from Charsi in Normal Act 1.
- Find the Runes from The Countess in Nightmare Act 1, The Forgotten Tower (Black Marsh).
Why?
- This item is used by your Mercenary in the fight against Madawc.
- You don't need this item in group play!

Peace Breast Plate (OPTIONAL):
Where?
- Buy Breast Plate from Farah in Normal Act 2.
- Find the Runes from The Countess in Nightmare Act 1, The Forgotten Tower (Black Marsh).
Why?
- Peace is a massive damage boost against tanky opponents!

Ocher Heavy Boots of Haste:
Where?
- Buy Boots with 20% Faster Run/Walk and Resistances from Charsi or Gheed in Nightmare Act 1.
Why?
- Massive Quality of Life.
- Resistances help you stay alive easier. Lightning and Fire Resistances are your priorities!

Ocher Belt of the Colossus:
Where?
- Buy a Belt with Life and Resistances from Charsi or Gheed in Nightmare Act 1.
Why?
- Massive Quality of Life.
- Resistances help you stay alive easier. Lightning and Fire Resistances are your priorities!

Attributes

Strength
In this build we allocate enough Stat Points to Strength to equip all of our gear.

Vitality
After you put your points into Strength and Dexterity, make sure to check if it is recommended to put Stat Points into Energy. Meet the suggested amount of Energy and put any remaining Stat Points into Vitality.

Dexterity
In this build we allocate enough Dexterity to equip all of our gear.

Energy
In this build we highly recommend putting around 20 Stat Points into Energy when you start using Exploding Arrow. Also put 20 Stat Points into Energy at the respec.

Breakpoints

For more information on the mechanics involved check out our in-depth Resource here.

All builds rely on specific Breakpoints for effectiveness throughout the game. Meeting Breakpoints for Cast Rate, Hit Recovery, and Block Rate increases the rate of casting spells, recovering from big Damage, and block by 1 Frame per Breakpoint.

Increased Attack Speed (IAS) - Charged Strike
Increased Attack Speed controls how fast our Character attacks. In this build we aim for 50% Increased Attack Speed, which is achieved with the suggested Gear. Note: Using other weapon bases requires different amounts of Increased Attack Speed to have the same effect. Please consult the (IAS Calculator) to determine what values your alternative base requires.

IAS Breakpoint Charged Strike

Increased Attack Speed (IAS) - Lightning Fury
Increased Attack Speed controls how fast our Character attacks. In this build we aim for 30% Increased Attack Speed, which is achieved with the suggested Gear. Note: Using other weapon bases requires different amounts of Increased Attack Speed to have the same effect. Please consult the (IAS Calculator) to determine what values your alternative base requires.

IAS Breakpoint Lightning Fury

Faster Cast Rate (FCR)
We do not target a specific Cast Rate Breakpoint in this Build. We do not rely on spells to deal Damage.

Faster Hit Recovery (FHR)
Faster Hit Recovery controls how fast our Character finishes the Hit Recovery animation. In this build we aim for 25% Faster Hit Recovery, which is achieved with the suggested gear and Charms.

Hit Recovery Breakpoint

Faster Block Rate (FBR)
Faster Block Rate controls how fast our Block Animation finishes after a successful Block. In this build we aim for the 40% Faster Block Rate, which is achieved with the suggested gear.

Block Rate Breakpoint

Faster Run Walk (FRW)
There are no Breakpoints for Faster Run / Walk. With the recommended gear you reach 45% Faster Run / Walk.

Mercenary

During the leveling process, the Mercenary rarely has any use. It is very hard to keep any of them alive.

In solo gameplay, the Amazon relies on the Mercenary for the fight against Hell Ancients (namely Madawc). Using the Mercenary bug, which makes him not targetable by certain monsters, he is able to provide massive damage against Madawc. For this, he only needs to be equipped with Strength Spear. 25% Chance of Crushing Blow reduces Madawc's current Life by 1/8 with each proc. Due to the fact that Madawc has massive Lightning Resistance even after Lower Resist, Crushing Blow reduces the duration of this fight significantly.

To help survive various scenarios, remember you can drag Healing Potions onto the portrait, or shift + 1/2/3/4 to directly feed them a Healing Potion from your belt. The Mercenary also gains bonus Resistances from Thawing Potions and Antidote Potions.

If your Mercenary dies in battle, you can revive them from any of the Mercenary NPC in any Act. This comes with an increasing cost, capping at 50,000 Gold. Keep that in mind and decide if the Mercenary is currently worth the cost.

Hardcore

All of our Leveling Guides are viable for Hardcore.
Changes to consider:

  • Over Level before you enter Nightmare / Hell. Suggested Target Levels are ~38-40 for Nightmare and 65+ for Hell.
  • This build is using Rhyme. This gives us the option to go for some Chance to Block. Be aware that going for more Dexterity leaves fewer points for Vitality, and makes you more susceptible against elemental damage.
If you don't want to go for higher Chance to Block, and have another source for Cannot Be Frozen, you can use Ancient's Pledge to get large amounts of Resistances.
  • Make sure to have your Cold, Fire, and Lightning Resistances capped at 75% when you enter Nightmare and Hell. The easy way to check this is to enter the difficulty you want to play and open your Character screen.
    • We recommend farming Flayer Jungle or The Secret Cow Level in Nightmare for Charms. They make it easy to cap your Resistances.
  • During the respec you can choose to go for Valkyrie right away. This leaves you with less remaining Skill Points and you can not simultaneously max out Lightning Fury and Charged Strike. Make Skill Level 5 Pierce and Lightning Fury your priority.

Gear Options

With a shared stash now available and the fact that this might not be your first Character we want to give you some gear options that can improve your Leveling experience a lot!

  • Death's Hand + Death's Guard provides you with 30% Increased Attack Speed, All Resistances +15%, and Cannot be Frozen. This Set allows you to switch out Rhyme for Ancient's Pledge to get more Resistances. It is also possible to reach the Attack Speed Breakpoint for Lightning Fury at 52% Increased Attack Speed. Use this combination until you reach Level 75 if it is available! The only drawback is that the Belt only gives you 2 rows of Potions.
  • Ravenfrost can be a source for Cannot be Frozen at Level 45+. It allows you to use Ancient's Pledge instead of Rhyme for more Resistances.
  • Hsarus' Iron Heel and Sander's Riprap are strong options for the Boots slot, providing you with +xx% Faster Run / Walk.
  • Titan's Revenge is the Best in Slot Weapon. They can be used at Level 42. Meeting the Dexterity requirements for this item early means that you have to sacrifice a lot of Vitality. You also lose the Increased Attack Speed from your Weapon slot which you need to compensate for with the rest of your gear, if possible.
  • Another source of Increased Attack Speed can be Twitchthroe, which also provides 20% Faster Hit Recovery and 25% Increased Chance of Blocking. This is an extremely powerful Body Armor, especially for Hardcore.
  • The Stone of Jordan provides you with +1 to All Skills which scales our Damage up significantly. It's a rather expensive option, but if you have one, put it on!
  • A rare Amulet with +x to Amazon Skills is very powerful. Unique options for the Amulet are The Eye of Etlich, The Cat's Eye, and Highlord's Wrath.
  • The final option is the Cow King Set (Cow King's Hooves, Cow King's Hide, and Cow King's Horns). In combination with Death's Hand + Death's Guard this gives you 60% Increased Attack Speed, and massive Resistances with Ancient's Pledge. The only drawback is the loss of +1 to all Skills from Lore, however, you can use Titan's Revenge which makes up for that easily!

Gear Progression

< Level 12

Until we reach Level 12 we rely on Javelins to deal Damage. Having multiple Javelin stacks reduces the time you need to spend in town to repair them. You can also use Fire Arrow with a Hunter's Bow. Be aware that this Skill uses lots of Mana and prepare Minor Mana Potions in your inventory!
Useful Rings and Amulets are not easy to come by at this stage. Use anything that gives you Life, Resistances, or Mana.
Starting at Level 6 you only use Poison Javelin until you reach Level 12.
During the early Levels, you need to keep an eye on your Stamina usage. Make sure to always have some Stamina Potion in your inventory. They give you infinite Stamina for 30 seconds. This duration stacks, so you can drink multiple Potions for long sections of running. You lose the Duration on death or when using Save & Exit.
Keep a Tome of Town Portal and Tome of Identify in your inventory for the full Leveling process.
Allocate your Stat Points to reach these Attribute values at Level 11:

Level 12 to 32-36

At Level 12 we start using Exploding Arrow.
When you enter Act 2, buy a Belt from Farah for access to 3 rows of Potions. Equip a Gemmed Hunter's Bow with 2 Rubies to increase your Damage. Start using Stealth as soon as you hit Level 17. Switch to Zephyr Hunter's Bow when it is available to you. Remove the Javelin from your secondary Weapon slot to make room for Gnarled Staff of Teleportation at Level 24.
Useful Rings and Amulets are not easy to come by. Use anything that gives you Life, Resistances, Mana, or + to Skills.
After killing Baal in Normal, go to Nightmare and shop for Heavy Gloves of Readiness, Ocher Heavy Boots of Haste, and Ocher Belt of the Colossus.
Remember: While maxing out Exploding Arrow all Skill Points you gain from Quests are put into Fire Arrow.

Allocate your Stat Points to reach these Attribute values at Level 35:
Note: Use more Strength (Less Vitality) if you find good replacements for the items you bought at the start of Nightmare! But don't go past 60 Strength!

Skill Tree until respec
Level 32-36 to 75

Somewhere between Level 32 and 36 is when you are going to use your respec. Remember your shopping list before you do so!
Respec: Get up to Skill Level 5 Pierce and invest your remaining points to max out Lightning Fury and Charged Strike.
After maxing out these Skills you pick up Valkyrie before filling in the Synergies for Lightning Fury and Charged Strike.
Skip Valkyrie if you are playing in a group!
Useful Rings and Amulets are not easy to come by. Use anything that gives you Life, Resistances, Mana, or + to Skills.
Keep the Gnarled Staff of Teleportation in your secondary Weapon slot and use Wand of Lower Resistance and Peace against Act bosses and Lightning Immune enemies you need to kill. If you face unbreakable Immunities or hordes of Lightning Immunes, try to skip them. In Chaos Sanctuary you may have to re-roll for Immunities to go away.
